Château De Villeneuve Saumur Blanc 2021 White Wine
Saumur Blanc is one of France's most underrated whites. Obviously, the likes of Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé and Muscadet hog the limelight in the Loire. But even in Saumur itself, this humble Chenin Blanc gets overlooked by those seeking great value Crèmant and the region's classic red, Saumur-Champigny. But we'll stand for it no longer… All hail Saumur Blanc - the perfect white for those who want a little more weight and oomph from their whites, but without compromising crisp refreshment or slipping into the world of big, buttery Chardonnay. Château de Villeneuve's Saumur Blanc is certified organic and vegan friendly. Slowly fermented, 30% in oak and 70% in steel, it offers up a dazzling display of blossom, honeysuckle, green apples, grapefruit zest, peach sorbet, dried apricots, sea breezes and a dusting of gingernut crumbs. One of our go-to wines as an aperitif, or for simple fish dishes, creamy pasta, wild mushrooms or nutty salads. If you can avoid the allure of the region's multiple mushroom museums, head east along the Loire out of Saumur and you'll discover Château de Villeneuve - one of an embarrassment of stunning properties in the area. This family-run estate has been making wine since 1577. With only five hectares of their 25 dedicated to Chenin Blanc, this white is a rare treat that's not to be missed.£2.47 per 100.00ml
