Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 2018 Red Wine
""This is a first-rate Gevrey villages and easily achieves Premier Cru quality."- Allen Meadows, Burghound Clos Prieur is one of the finest of all Gevrey-Chambertin's lieux-dits. The magnificent 70-year-old vines are grown in iron-rich clay over limestone just below the Grand Cru vineyards of Mazis-Chambertin. As a result, this wine always punches above its price point. Expect a dark, lush and textural Pinot Noir with black cherry, crème de cassis, redcurrant, pomegranate and liquorice flavours, underpinned by something wilder and earthier. 2018 was a heatwave vintage, but Alexandrine Roy managed to create a"wine of delightful pleasure and joy"according to SteenÖhman of Winehog, one that still has all its energy, intensity and freshness. A fine choice for pairing with game, slow-cooked stews or maybe even the Christmas turkey? Alexandrine Roy is not the stereotypical Burgundy winemaker. Before having two children, she could regularly be seen zipping around the region on a yellow motorbike. Taking the reins from her father Marc in 2003, she represents the fourth generation of her family to farm their old vines in Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay. And as leading Burgundy critic Allen Meadows of Burghound says,"Roy just doesn't seem to miss as she's a perfectionist."Fellow Burgundy expert SteenÖhman of Winehog agrees, noting that she makes"wines that will thrill and immerse you in hedonistic pleasure."£9.6 per 100.00ml
