Harvey Nichols Saint-Julien Collection, Wine Hamper, Case of Three Red Wine
Saint-Julien is the smallest of Médoc's major communes and, being home to none of Bordeaux's First Growth superstars, sometimes slips slightly under-the-radar. But those-in-the-know adore this area of the Left Bank, because the châteaux here are remarkably consistent and manage to combine a kind of perfect hybrid of Margaux's elegance and Pauillac's power. For our Saint-Julien Collection, we've included wines from three different vintages and some of the region's most prestigious properties. First up is a wine from Château Lagrange, a property bought and heavily invested in by Suntory. 2015 was an outstanding vintage in Saint-Julien, making their Le Fiefs de Lagrange an intriguing prospect. Next, there's glorious Gloria. Even the label blows its own trumpet. And that fanfare is fully justified. This château was painstakingly built by Henri Martin, piecing together Grands Crus plots as ranked in the 1855 Classification from across the appellation. The property also has a few hectares in Pauillac amongst Bordeaux's big boys, which they have a special dispensation to use in the final blend. Although unclassified itself, Château Gloria more than stands up to its ancient peers and in many vintages surpasses them at a lower price point. Robert Parker describes this as"a property that has been on a major qualitative roll for decades."So, their 2017 should not be missed. And finally, there's a wine from the much-loved Château Gruaud-Larose, producers of some of the region's most full-bodied and long-lived reds. Sarget de Gruaud-Larose 2016 is wonderfully aromatic, gorgeously fruit and displays deft use of oak. In the words of respected wine critic Neal Martin,"It's just a delicious wine that will give a decade's worth of drinking pleasure."Cheers, to Saint-Julien.
