JJ Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2018 White Wine
95 points,"At once delicately spicy, but well-structured with so many subtle nuances, this is a very sophisticated Spätlese with only a hint of sweetness. Very long, spicy and smoky finish, and just beginning to open up."- James Suckling 94+ points,"The 2018 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese is precise and remarkably refined on the subtle yet complex, terroir-driven and slightly flinty nose. Rich and piquant on the palate, with a vital acidity exposition and crunchy grip, this is a serious and sustainably structured Spätlese from'the other'Sonnenuhr. The finish is so mineral that it tastes almost dry and if not now in 10 or 20 years. This is a great ZSU to be served in a decade or two."- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Although Wehlener Sonnenuhr might be the most famous of the'sundial vineyards', but its neighbour, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, is every bit as epic a location. This plot in the Middle Mosel contains mainly old and ungrafted vines, with many being octogenarians or older. There's very little soil (what exists is predominantly blue Devonian slate and red schist) here, so the roots hit the slate bedrock quickly. This immediately puts the vines under stress and reduces the yields. The resulting wines from Zeltinger Sonnenuhr are complex, concentrated and mineral. Where Wehlener Sonnenuhr is a masterclass in finesse, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr's wines often display a little more wildness, with intriguing earthy, rocky and smoky notes. Joh. Jos Prüm, also known simply as JJ Prüm, owns a small portion of the old vines on this plot, so the wine is understandably scarce. And as you can see from the critics'reviews above, the wine they make there is an absolute firecracker. Drink the 2018 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese now and you'll love it; save it until 2030 or beyond and you'll wish you'd bought cases of it. Pair this off-dry, vegan-friendly Riesling with fresh Vietnamese dishes, Thai salads, dumplings, citrus-doused tacos, pork with apple sauce, sausages and mash or nibbles before dinner. Founded in 1911, JJ Prüm is arguably one of the most iconic German producers. The estate stretches for 33.5 hectares alongside the Mosel Valley and they're renowned for their pure and exceptionally long-lived expressions of Riesling.£4.67 per 100.00ml
