Produced to a formula dating back to 1821, Luxardo Maraschino Originale is a world-famous liqueur crafted using marasca cherries. These small and sour cherries, plus some of their leaves and branches, are infused into alcohol in wooden vats made of larch for up to three years. This is then distilled in traditional copper pot stills and matured in more wooden vats, but this time made of ash. Sugar syrup is added to reduce the alcohol to 32% and temper the tang of the cherries. The result is an undisputed classic that deserves a place in any serious collection. Established in 1821 by Girolamo Luxardo, the distillery that bears his name is one of the oldest and most intriguing to be found anywhere in the world. Originally set up in Zadar, which is now part of Croatia, they had to move the operation to Italy following the intense bombing of World War II. Relocated to Torreglia, in the province of Padua, the company is now more than 200 years old, but it's still run by the same founding family, and they still use many of the original family recipes.
