Montanya Platino Rum is matured for a year or more in barrels that previously held Laws Colorado Whiskey and the distillery's own Oro Rum. This imparts an unparalleled smoothness and complexity that have earned it a Double Gold, nine Gold Medals and two Best in Class designations in international competitions, as well as"Best White Rum"at the World Rum Awards in 2015. Just before bottling the tiniest touch of Colorado honey is added to enhance the natural flavour (around 0.04% per bottle so don't expect any discernible sweetness). It's then filtered through a coconut husk carbon filter to remove the colour. The result is a white rum flecked with notes of crunchy cantucci, toasted almonds, creamy chai, iced coffee, tonka bean and white pepper. Platino is fast becoming our go-to for a Daiquiri or Mojito, but we also like to drink it long with lemonade and a little drizzle of floral honey. Karen Hoskins fell in love with rum while on holiday in Goa, India. Inspired by rums made in the high mountains of Guatemala, she decided to make her own and set up Montanya Distillers in the impossibly picturesque Crested Butte, Colorado. This Rocky Mountain rum company is B-Corp Certified, which means they are all-round good eggs who are totally on it when it comes to the environment, sustainability, their people, their supply chain and giving back to the community. They are leading a global movement to put people and the planet before profit. Their small-batch artisanal rums are made at high altitude using love; a barrel-load of integrity; alembic copper pot stills over open flames; Louisiana-grown, farm-sourced sugar cane (they are great friends with the farmers); and pure Colorado mountain spring water drawn from an snowmelt-fed aquifer beneath the distillery. Don't expect the intense tropical fruit and full-on wood found in their tropical counterparts, these are quite unique cold-climate rums with more of a spice and kernel character. Perfect after a day in the mountains.£15 per 100.00ml
