Niepoort is a small but high-quality Port shipper, long renowned for their excellent Ports but also now making waves with their Douro table wines too. The Ports are all traditionally made but always of excellent quality - often still trodden and fermented in lagares and aged extensively before release. The Niepoort philosophy has been, for the last decade, to innovate, diversify, and break taboos, maintaining tradition. Niepoort Senior Tawny has spent the majority of its life ageing in small barrels in the producer's lodge in the heart of the Douro valley. These storage vessels enable a soft and light contact with air through the pores of the wood, which results in a slow oxidation process over the years and impacts on the character of the wine. The quirky moustache depicted on the front label is intended to emphasise this port's seniority and mature, complex nature. A brick red tawny appearance precedes a velvety sweet mouth feel with a fine blend of old wines giving richness balanced with younger wines imparting a freshness and complexity. Ripe mixed berry fruit intermingle with notes of spice and developing nutty flavours that last long on the finish.
