Salcombe is a small fishing village in South Devon famed for its smugglers and shipping. Fast ships called'Salcombe Fruiters'would race their cargoes of valuable but perishable exotic fruit and spices from the Azores, Iberia and the Mediterranean to eager markets in the UK. When steamships took over this trade, many of these nippy schooners were requisitioned for the stockfish trade from Newfoundland, credited by some as being the world's first industrial scale food production line, something that would change the way we eat forever. Fast forward to 1995 and most of the boats leaving Salcombe are used purely for pleasure. And that's how Angus and Howard met. While working as instructors at the Island Cruising Club, they would convene over a sundowner gin and tonic at the Salcombe Yacht Club. With their shared love of the finer things in life - travel, water sports, the finest food and obviously craft gin - it was here that the idea for the Salcombe Distilling Co. dropped anchor.
