Sesti Phenomena Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva 2013 Magnum 1500ml Red Wine
95 points,"Camphor, wild berry, violet, crushed herb and pipe tobacco aromas align in the glass. Savoury and elegant, the focused palate shows a youthful tension while a mineral vein underscores juicy red cherry, raspberry compote, star anise and baking spice. Bright acidity keeps it balanced."- Wine Enthusiast The label of each new release of the phenomenal Phenomena Brunello di Montalcino Riserva commemorates a significant astronomical event that occurred during the year of the harvest. On 28 April 2013, the planet Saturn was in full Opposition (aligned on the opposite side of the Earth to the sun) and was visible throughout the night in the constellation of Libra. Sesti chose this dramatic occurrence to feature on their equally dramatic flagship wine. Although Sesti's Brunello di Montalcino comes from one of the warmer corners of the region, the low intervention winemaking perfectly captures the elegance of the vintage. When it comes to Sesti's fabulous Phenomena,"this one is their best yet"according to Decanter Magazine. However, it's still immensely youthful and will evolve spectacularly for decades to come, so don't open it too soon! With his round, thick-rimmed, almost Harry Potter-esque glasses, Guiseppe Maria Sesti is no ordinary wine producer. Having studied music and astronomy in Venice, he'd never planned to go into the wine business. Guigi, as he is known, met his now wife in North Wales while writing the first of his five-or-so books on astronomy. The family moved to Tuscan in the 1970s and he bought a ruined castle on a hill - presumably a great place for a telescope - and an abandoned hamlet called Argiano. Between writing about the stars and organising the festival of Baroque Opera in Tuscany, he began to visit local wineries. His passion grew and in the 1990s the Sesti family planted their first vineyards. Guiseppe's four children helped to harvest and stomp the first vintages and over time, his love of ancient calendars and celestial spheres has taken Sesti down the path of biodynamic production following lunar cycles. The eco-friendly estate contains vineyards, olive groves, animal grazing and woodlands spanning 102 hectares, so Guigi enlisted the help of his daughter Elisa. Ellie, as she goes by, was born in Tuscany, so has wine in her blood. She studied theatre design and classical architecture; so, like her father, brings a certain amount of artistry to the winemaking. Together they run what is considered by many to be one of the leading wineries in the region.£17 per 100.00ml
