Symington Family Estates Altano Organic Douro Red 2020 Red Wine
Symington Family Estates Altano Organic Douro Red 2020 Red Wine
Portugal is so hot right now. The value for money and pure drinking pleasure coming out of this corner of the Iberian Peninsula is off the charts. Combine this with organically grown grapes, vegan-friendly production, a juicy Malbec-like quality, and one of the world's most respected winemaking families, and you have the bang-on-trend Altano Organic Douro Red. The Symington family have been making wines in the Douro Valley - a UNESCO World Heritage Site of jaw-dropping beauty - since the 19th Century. They're the world's leading producer of premium Port, the biggest vineyard owner in the region and one of the first wineries to start making serious Douro DOC wines. As the producers of Graham's, Dow's, Cockburn's, Warre's and Quinta do Vesuvio, they are obviously most famous for their Ports, but the Altano wines they create are a revelation. This is an organic blend of predominantly Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca - classic varieties normally associated with Port - and Tinta Roriz (a.k.a. Tempranillo) grown in the hottest and driest area of the Douro. Aged for six months in French oak, it pops with moreish hedgerow blackberries, cherry chocolate liqueurs, Christmas cake, dried rose petals and a peppery beefiness reminiscent of biltong. Immensely crowd pleasing and equally as versatile, this feels like Portugal's answer to Argentinian Malbec, so can be served with anything from a summer barbeque to Sunday roast in midwinter.£1.87 per 100.00ml
